One big step for mobile browsability
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 19:14The open-source community has produced some great tools for making the web more user-friendly. Now, thanks to Mobile Plugin for Drupal, one of those tools has just had its benefits extended to everything mobile.
An elegant solution that adapts Drupal web content for small screen display and browsing, it installs ready-to-run on any mobile device, but is also configurable to make the most of a particular device’s capabilities.
The download comes with a mobile-optimized Drupal theme, though other themes are also available, and there’s an installation guide to walk you through your installation and configuration options.
The plug-in features automatic device-detection, allowing site configurations to target particular device groups or even particular devices. There is also the option to override the device-detection.
Images scale automatically to fit the display-size, and embedded content can be selected to display as links. For example, Youtube video embeds can be replaced with thumbnails that link to m.youtube.
Forum Nokia, whose role is to foster third-party development of mobile applications, initiated the plug-in as an open-source project, and it will be interesting to see where the community takes it.
Drupal has won a lot of users in recent years, and there will no doubt be a lot of excitement at this new open-source extension. It will no doubt become part of this history of how the web went mobile.
